As we enter the AIoT era, many existing 2-wire intercom systems fail to meet the growing security and convenience needs of residents. Akuvox's 2-wire residential SIP video intercom solution is perfect for upgrading outdated systems on existing infrastructure. They allow for:
- Cost reduction by reusing existing cables.
- Upgrade of intercom functions.
- Adaptation to projects of different scales.
When it comes to a 2-wire project, the biggest constraint is its deployment.
End users do not want to change their interior design to replace the devices. As for owners and installers, they have to consider the high cost of labor and other expenses involved in redeployment.
So, how do you implement a new installation or replacement of a 2-wire intercom system at a lower cost? Let's find out!
Quick device and PSU selection
In this guide, we will be using products from the manufacturer Akuvox. The indoor monitors are C313W-2 and the doorphones are R20A-2. The "-2" at the end of the part number indicates that these are Akuvox 2-wire products. This manufacturer also offers a whole range of IP products (intercom, access control, monitors, etc.).
We can also use a Switch NS-2 or IP door phones such as the R29 for example.
The NS-2 Switch allows the junction between the 2-wire network and the IP network thanks to its RJ45 port. It can also power up to 6 Akuvox 2-wire devices when connected to a 48V or 24V power supply (we recommend the use of 48V power supplies.
Note: With a 48V or 24V power supply, an NS-2 can power up to 6 devices simultaneously, while the C313W-2 can only power 5 devices without an NS2.
Exemple of a villa
This is a 5-room villa, each room containing a C313W-2. The 48V power supply allows the C313W-2 installed in the living room to power three other C313W-2s and one R20A-2.
An R20A-2 is installed at the entrance for access control and intercom, and several IP cameras in the garden for surveillance.
With Akuvox's cloud, users can answer incoming calls from the gatekeepers, monitor their home at any time via cell phone, etc.
Exemple of an apartment building
This is a small apartment building.
Each apartment has an R20A and a C313W-2 for home intercom and monitoring.
The NS-2 on each floor, using the 48V power supply, connects 3 homes to provide network stability.
The R29 is installed in the lobby, allowing users to make calls and do access control, thanks to the multiple access control technologies built into the R29 (facial recognition, PIN Code, QR Code, BLE, NFC, RFID, etc).
With the Cloud system, administrators can manage the building remotely, and users can answer incoming calls from the intercom, monitor their home at any time through the cell phone, etc.
Summary
As we've seen here, deploying a 2-wire system can sometimes be useful in cases of renovation, such as when upgrading an older facility.
The implementation of a NS-2 allows to set up a hybrid IP <-> 2-wire system and thus to get the best of both worlds.
